A counterpart to pain: itch

چکیده
Pain is not the only defense mechanism that alerts us to a physical hazard — the other is itch, an unpleasant sensation that is distinct from pain because it provokes the desire to scratch. Although pain and itch feel different, these two sensations share many qualities. Both are aversive sensations that evolved to protect us. Moreover, both can become pathological, developing into chronic debilitating conditions that ruin one’s quality of life.

Induction of nocebo and placebo effects on itch and pain by verbal suggestions.
Physical complaints, such as pain, can be effectively reduced by placebo effects through induction of positive expectations, or increased by nocebo effects through induction of negative expectations. In the present study, verbally induced nocebo and placebo effects on itch were experimentally investigated for the first time. In part 1, the role of verbal suggestions in inducing nocebo effects o...
متن کاملMolecular Mechanisms of Itch and Pain: An Overview
Itch and pain are two distinct sensory modalities elicited by noxious and pruritic stimuli, respectively. The cellular and electrophysiological characteristics of itch and pain are very similar; thus discerning the mechanical difference between these two sensory modalities has long been elusive. Recent advances in this field have revealed various neuronal receptors responsible for itch and pain...

OF THE DISSERTATION Molecular mechanisms of itch sensations By Seungil Kim Doctor of Philosophy in Biology and Biomedical Sciences (Developmental Biology) Washington University in St. Louis, 2011 Associate Professor James Skeath, Chairperson Itch is a sensation which causes scratching response to protect skin against external harmful reagents. Acute itch arises in short time period after insect...
متن کاملItch and pain.
Decades of pain research have succeeded in elucidating complex mechanisms of acute activation and chronic sensitization of nociceptors leading to pain. In contrast, itch conditions have received less attention and even basic mechanisms for the induction of itch are still unclear. In this review we describe itch-specific pathways, but also evidence for a modified pattern theory of pruritus offer...
متن کاملHistamine-induced itch and its relationship with pain
Itch is one of the major complications of skin diseases. Although there are various substances that induce itch or pruritus, it is evident that histamine is the best known endogenous agent that evokes itch. Even though histamine-induced itch has been studied for some time, the underlying mechanism of itch is just beginning to emerge. Although various downstream signaling pathways of histamine r...
